2:08 bro's got that https://youtu.be/8Ajedeud_K8?si=IBuTt-QC5SmZphD3 Mega Drive - Acid Spit rizz.

What synths/preset are playing there (and on their own at the end)? I've been searching for both those sounds forever.

name responds:

I don't remember that sound, but I think it's from Sytrus. I'll check it when I get home.

EDIT: It's Electric 1 from Sytrus.

What do you even do for 80 hours!? That's insane! Sounds great though.

death2go responds:

cast different ideas for different sections of a song, spend too much time on it to try to make it sound good, realize no matter how much i try it just wont for that melody, delete and remake a section or melody, repeat 3 times per section for the entire song lmao

sounds like the unholy Galaxy Collapse

MicroMusician responds:

Yes, but it's the unholy Heian Alien

id be interested to hear this with loads of compression and fx, could actually sound more like a mega drive song than your other one

edit: wait, is this Mega Drive as in the artist or Mega Drive as in the Sega Genisis?

KDan responds:

As Genesis ofc ^_^

The overall mixing and composition is pretty good. And normally I wouldn't say anything about this, but it kindof important to the genre... the drums aren't very liquidy. I don't know the first thing about how to make them liquidy, but maybe some stereo width somehow?

Febbs responds:

Hm. Well I think you're onto something there. But I'm going more on a solid drum beat than using vinyl breaks to accompany this. I really like how it works in this arrange, honestly. So I just stayed with it. But thanks for pointing that out!

notes as im listening:
- the notes at the beginning are long. both the lead and that background thing. it sounds too smooth for the very rough sounds used.
- impressive loudness, stereo image, and general mixing
- that said, that "bass" (?) playing the long notes like at the beginning sounds weird in general, and the sidechaining/compression is part of that.
- the vocal is a little too repetitive. its too long and recognizable as the word "go" to be used like a percussion instrument.
- the horizontal composition is good. none of the transitions stood out to me in a bad way. it flowed nicely.

Winkwing responds:

That's the wing tech style baby! So close to being right but always fucking a few things up!

I kid, thanks for the feedback, planning on showing off what some of my FLP files tend to look like after a remix is made if you're interested.
Either way, constructive criticism is always welcome!

this song could use some stereo work:
- the drums could use some stereo imaging (give each "drum" its own panning).
- the instruments themselves sound fairly mono. I haven't figured out how to make a mono sound wider, but by doing that, you could get a ZUN-style sausage waveform.

you might also make the drums a little quieter and everything else a little louder, but that might happened anyway if you do some stereo stuff.

SeleDreams responds:

Thanks for the advices, ngl I myself would like to make my songs more stereo, but it's a bit hard to make it "balanced" when playing with panning

I'm soon going to get an SD-80 which would allow me to have access to more accurate touhou 6-like instruments, as for this song I used the Soundcanvas VA vst which is an equivalent to the SC-88 pro while good it doesn't have all the instruments used by zun (who uses the sd-90, which is the same as the sd-80 just with another form factor)

Man i've wanted to remix this song so bad. I feel the same about it, the energy of the intro is awesome, and the rest is pretty good. Mix could use some more high end. idk what tools you have available to you but I used to have similar problems and found 50% OTT (on the master maybe?) boosts the high end nicely.

Paint2Acetone responds:

I agree that my mixing skills are very mid (I literally learned what "sidechaining" and "eqing" are last week,) so that's the main thing I'm working on right now.

Anyways, thanks for the feedback again, really appreciated

also no idea what ott is but whatever

leave a link to the original, or at least some more information on it

I'm ashamed to say this when you're so proud of this song but its not quite Touhou 6 until the very end with the trumpets. Zunpets were the huge change that made 6, 7, and 8 so iconic. What this sounds a whole lot like though is Seihou. (If you aren't aware of Seihou, its a bullet hell series ZUN made the music for between the retro and classic windows era.)
I really like the sound of the Seihou songs, but I don't really like the melodies and song structures of most of them. So, the fact that you made one with a good melody and structure is (IMO) the real pride of this song. And don't get the wrong idea about this. Its a good song. I usually hide my scores regardless of what I rate but I'm not in order to emphasize this.

Fantasyck responds:

Nah, don't worry, I think I get what you're saying. Touhou, Seihou... either way, hearing that I nailed the "early ZUN MIDI music" vibe means a lot, and I'm glad you enjoyed the way the song played out (even if it's technically based off of a pre-existing song lol). Thanks for the kind words!

Darksynth, Horrorsynth, and Cyberpunk Musician. I mostly do Touhou arranges.
I'm also open for collabs/commissions.
